Arete stroked her hand soothingly through Iovene's curly mane.
"shhhhh," she whispered to the crying woman. "It's okay. It's okay."
She wrapped her arms protectively around the dowser's back, feeling the
deep shuddering quiet sobs that wracked the woman's body, and pulled
Iovene close. "It was just a nightmare, that's all. You're here now,
with us," the muscular blonde said softly.
Arete looked over Iovene's shoulder, to Kalai, who shrugged. One moment
they'd all been cuddled together asleep, the next...this. The young
woman turned her face away, looking about the stillquiet with cautious
eyes. The sky was clear and the stars were very bright. The evening
chitters had dulled a long time ago into night's stillness. Wild things
there may be, but they weren't close to the camp.
Iovene shook her head, pulling away from the sweet strong woman. "It
wasn't a nightmare, just a dream" she said. Iovene brushed her face
with her arm and sniffled. She shivered as small wind's hands brushed
against her shoulder, and then Kalai's. She looked at her smaller
lover, and touched the young woman's face with tear-wet fingers,
attempting a smile. "You are both so good to me."
Kalai looked confused, but smiled back, unsure of what brought the
comment on. She slid close to the woman, feeling the intense coolness
of Iovene's skin press against her front. It was as if Iovene been in
the well of Anipe, but the dowser had been with them all this time.
"It must have been some dream then," the little woman stated.
Iovene drew back the tears with another grunted sniffle and looked
sheepish. "It was." Then, she leaned back, twisting her face so she
could kiss Kalai gently on the lips. It was as sweet as the first time,
but saltier. Iovene sighed, then leaned back into Arete, burying her
face in the tall woman's shoulders. Another tear escaped and dribbled
down the crevice of the blonde's pale breasts. "Love me," Iovene said.
She felt the wet mark of a kiss on her shoulder, the soft pressure
against her hair.
"Always," they said.
-------
When dawn arrived, they were already breaking camp. There had been no
point in going back to sleep, so they spent their time loving, then
waking past the slumber that threatened to take over in their comfort.
But they had things to do...
Iovene gently tamped the fire out, thanking it for its life and service.
Then she covered it with water, returning life's juice back to Gaia. The
water sighed it's warm eternal bliss to air and flame.
Then they started walking towards Skula, to tell the queen their plan.
