Iovene came down with a powerful case of the giggles during dinner. She thought, perhaps, it was caused by the glowering looks Velona passed her way. Scowls and harsh expressions tended to have the opposite affect on the eccentric. They were meant to intimidate, but they made her laugh.
It was an unfortunate habit that had gotten into trouble more than once. One of the benefits of living as an Amazon, however, was that her nervous reaction was often percieved by outsiders as bravery. Amazons, on the other hand, just got offended. Which was the case with Velona, so she grimaced even more fiercely. Which meant that Iovene did a lot of looking down at her plate. . .and giggling.
It wasn't really her fault though. Her ear was being tickled. She thought it was a hair, so she' tried moving the curly strands that resided over her ear. That didn't help. The whispering tickling sensation continued to torment her and Velona's crotchety looks continued to incite her.
Velona stood up. The bench scraped back along the floor. Her hand came slapping down upon the surface of the table. "I've Had ENOUGH of you. You knock it off or I'll . . ." Her knife was in her hand already and she stabbed the air with it.
"Leave her be." Eudora's voice rang clearly through the dining area. Xena looked at the redhead sideways and finished the bite she'd taken. She chewed thoughtfully as she watched the nonverbal communication between lovers take place. It was a towering argument if the intensity of eye contact were any indication. . .
Eudora stood firm, narrowing her eyes until Velona finally backed down. There was a sniff from the chieftess, then a grimace. She sat down, looked up once at Eudora who was still giving her the evil eye and then picked up her fork. She wasn't sure why she was picking up the fork, but she was sure that if she didn't pick up the utensil at that precise moment and stuff her face with something she was going to regret it.
Eudora was too upset to feel triumphant. She sat down, but as she did, she looked over at Iovene. The dowser had stopped laughing. Now she was just staring into the air.
