Velona's hard edges didn't soften at all. Oh, she talked, but she didn't really say anything, since she really wasn't in the cooperative mood. Or so she thought. Gabrielle, however, was more skilled in extracting information than the Chieftess supposed. Especially when it came to reading between the lines.
By the time they were done the Amazon queen had a fuller picture of the whole situation, both the spoken and the unspoken. Velona was her enemy. Of that she was sure. The question was, how to neutralize the Chieftess without destroying her. She was, after all, a very good Chieftess (Skula had indeed prospered under her rule) and, if not loyal to the Queen, the dark skinned warrior was very loyal to the Amazons (or at least, her vision of the Amazons). This, the bard knew, would take some thinking and some subtleties. The problem would provide a good topic for discussion with her lovers.
Gabrielle grinned to herself at the sudden image of a long long scroll that just kept getting longer with each new problem, each new issue. Gods, how she wished Melosa were here. Now there was a woman of wisdom. The compact woman missed her. A lot.
Which brought her to the second part of the issue. As the Queen it was her duty to protect her people. Eudora had been kidnapped and her Amazons had been threatened with war. Now it was a matter of determining how deep the danger went. Which meant that there was a need for some reconnaissance. From the way it sounded, this Aulix person, had a real problem with Amazons in general, not just Skula. Which meant it might be a good idea to call upon some reinforcements. She grinned to herself again. Not that Xena wasn't the equivalent of a whole regiment of Amazons.
The benevolent red head graciously excused Velona from the council room and stood up. The proud woman, who was several heads taller than Gabrielle, bowed, then exited, but not without casting a narrow glance in the bard's direction. She wasn't sure what games the Queen was playing, but she would be watching. Meanwhile, her plans were already in the works. She'd sent a note to the high official of the council requesting that certain traditions be maintained. She also had her people (those that were loyal) watching for good exploitable opportunities. It would be interesting to see what happened next.
The lanky woman strode through the forest with the confidence of one who knew where she was going. So her observer thought, as she watched the tall fair woman make her way towards. . somewhere. Iovene, after a moment of looking at the lovely berries she would be abandoning and following that intuition which had led her there in the first place, made a mark with a couple of stones, and followed.
As it was, Jacosta did indeed know where she was going. In fact, her destination was quite clear in her mind and since she had a great memory for places and distances, and a personal learning of some wood lore, she made her way to one of her special homes. She did this, despite her earlier commitment to let these places go where the Gods will, for one reason only. She'd left one of her better chisels there. But she was no Amazon and certainly she wasn't used to being followed, so, despite a preternatural awareness of when her brother was about, she never saw the curly haired woman who trailed her the rest of the way towards a quiet sacred spot near a crystal stream.
